The Asian Beetle Connection

ASIAN BEETLE When Schatzy and I came out of our house, we hear a loud buzzing noise. The sound was a new sound. It wasn't a car or a garbage truck or the street sweeper. We looked up the block and saw men sawing down a tree and then grinding it up in this big machine. We couldn't believe they were cutting down the trees. Where would be able to sniff where our fellow dogs left their scent and where could I leave my scent to tell them that I had been there? By the end of the day, they had taken down 12 trees on the block. I couldn't understand why they were doing that. But I was glad that they didn't take the tree down in front of our house. My human was talking to a neighbor about the trees being taken down. That is when I found out it was those long-horned Asian beetles that took over the trees and that's why they had to take them down this spring. These Asian beetles invaded the trees many years ago, and the only way to eliminate them is to grind up the trees before the beetles could come out this spring.

It was a very sad week because when we were riding in the car, we passed many blocks that had trees taken down. It was sad to see all the trees taken down in Williamsburg and Greenpoint. Many of my dog friends were very sad because they took down many trees in McCarren Park. Many of the dogs go to the park to the dog run to visit their friends and that's where we have the B.Q.E. dog show every fall. My human told Schatzy and me that trees would be replanted this summer. And so they were, so there are new trees that we can scent and leave messages to our friends that we were there.

(Ed note: Try lampposts, Fluffy, until the trees get a little growth on them. Pee probably won't hurt the tree but neighbors get weird.)
