O B I T U A R I E S

Bliss
I sadly report the tragic death of Bliss, a young woman in her twenties, who was a B.A.R.C. volunteer and responsible for several animal rescues. She was a victim of violence against women. A former boyfriend decided to kill her and himself. Yes, an order of protection should have been enforced, but the root evil is the mindset that another living creature belongs to us to the point that we can end his or her life.

Her death was not only a tragedy for her human friends and family, but for all the animals she helped and would have helped had she been allowed to live out her life. Her mother graciously contributed memorial donations to B.A.R.C. to carry on Bliss's work. We especially extend our sympathy to her friend, Chris, and his dogs Betsy, Tasha, and Frank, who she helped care for.

Edison
Whoopy and I mourn the passing of Edison, owned by Tony's sister Donna, who nursed him during his last days. Whoopy commented that his coat stayed a beautiful glossy black up until the end. Our condolences to Donna and his companion animals.

Mom Dog
The Parks Department has a very mixed record when it comes to dogs. Those of you in the habit of frequenting the Grand Street Park at the East River realize by now it has been fenced off for renovation. Your owner will see the park prettied up years from now; unless you're a young pup, you may not live long enough. Don't be tempted to sneak in.

A mother dog rescued from the park, where they had sought shelter, died from rat poison with which the park was baited. Her puppy, rescued with her, is at the B.Q.E. It's very difficult for Williamsburg Street Retrievers not to pick up stuff from the street and from under bushes. Frances gave me another stern lecture about it just the other day. Actually, so did my friend Ralph, who once ate rat poison accidentally. Yes, there are antidotes, but what if your owner doesn't realize you ate it? Yes folks are supposed to post warnings, but often they don't. Yes, it's a playpen but come to the run in McCarren Park instead.

Please adopt Mom Dog's orphan puppy. She has the coloring of a golden retriever and needs someone to look out for her in the world.
