General Information on the Ave J business strip:
Avenue J, Coney Island Avenue, and the surrounding side streets makes for some of the best shopping in New York.
However, keeping several things in mind will make your visit to the Heart of
Midwood more pleasurable.
Because of a quirk in the Brooklyn Grid, Avenue J is the first and
only throughfare that allows traffic from Canarsie in the east to Boro Park and Bay Ridge in the West.
Other crosstown avenues are cut off by either the LIRR freight tracks along Ave I and Foster Ave,
the Brighton Line Subway Train, Ocean Parkway or water. As a result, this rather narrow strip is packed
with through traffic. Pateints and Courtesy when driving in the area is essential.
While parking is difficult, spots can be found in the surrounding community and side streets.
If possible one should be willing to walk a block
to reach the main strips. This is really no more distance
than a walk in the Kings Plaza Shopping Garage, and in many ways,
Shopping here can be an ever better experience.
Avenue J is loaded with ethnic food joints! Enjoy the accommodations. Russian, Italian,
Kosher, and old fashion dinners can be found on the strip. There is no reason to bring a bag lunch.
Metered parking is suspended on Sundays, which is good news for the local Orthodox Jewish
Community. Also on most Sundays, the Post office has a truck to take mail and sell stamps in front of Kosher Delight
on Avenue J and E12th street.
From North Brooklyn, the easiest aproach is via Coney Island Ave by Car. From the south, Coney Island Avenue,
Ocean Avenue, or even Ocean Parkway are good routes to the area. From the East and West, Avenue J is the only through street.
Mass Transit is terrific to Avenue J as the D or Q train to Avenue J leaves you right there. The area is also serviced by the B11,
B6 on Avenue J, B68 on Coney Island Avenue, and the B49 on Ocean Avenue.
Most of the roads in the area have happily been repaved and are some of the best in the city.
By the way, the turn onto Avenue J at the corner of E14th Street and Avenue J
is illegal during business hours. It is also often ticket trap.
